Haven's Edge

The Death of Belak
Session 7

Yusdrayl lead the party to the lower levels of the Citadel, as promised. Yusdrayl tried to convince the party to offer themselves as prisoners to get closer to Belak, but the party decided to fight their way to Belak instead.

They entered a room filled with low-ranking goblins. They convinced the goblins to stay back while they entered into the next room and found an armored goblin named Renkil sitting on a throne, surrounded by strange zombies. As combat started, the goblins fled for their lives while Renkil starting channeling negative energy, killing several of his fleeing followers during the battle. The party defeated Renkil and his zombies with ease. The party asked Renkil about Belak’s location before killing him. On Renkil’s corpse they found an item that resembled a whistle carved out of petrified wood, with the dwarven words Azan-gund (The Nightcaller) carved into it.

Yusdrayl lead the party through the corridors of the lower citadel until they reached a huge cavern filled thorns and briars. The party hacked their way through the dense overgrowth until they spotted the Gulthias Tree looming in the distance.

They then distracted Yusdrayl and backstabbed her before approaching the tree.

They found Belak in the casting of some sort of ritual. He was surrounded by glowing runes on the ground. Similar runes were painted on the bark of the tree. Belak did not respond to the party, but 8 twig blights, 3 supplicants of the Gulthias Tree, and Belak’s familiar (a quasit) moved to protect the evil spellcaster. Two of the three supplicants were former members of Senna’s adventuring party: Sharwyn Treestride, an elf ranger, and Ersky Timbers, a gnome fighter. The other supplicant was a large human named Adrak d’Meridan, a paladin of Eidar until his disgraceful capture by Belak and forced servitude to the Gulthias Tree.

After fighting Belak’s guardians for a short time, Aethyr shot an arrow at Belak, interrupting his ritual. Belak levitated up into the branches of the tree where he hurled acid arrows at the party while they struggled with Belak’s guardians on the ground. The party knocked Sharwyn and Ersky unconscious as Belak moved to finish his ritual. A terrible noise filled the cavern as Belak finished the ritual which drained the power of the Gulthias Tree and funneled it into Belak. The twig blights suddenly shook, and then moved to protect the tree by attacking Belak.

Belak shot beams of fire at the tree, burning and killing it, before returning his attention to the party. With new strength, Belak rained acid and hellfire on the party until they were able to knock him from the tree, where he fell to his death.

After the battle, the party tied up the unconscious Gulthias supplicants and made camp at the base of the tree. The party set fire to the remains of the Gulthias Tree, but the flames were extinguished by the druid who knew that the tree was made of valuable darkwood.

To Dalton
Session 4

The party returned to Jevin and Senna to discover that Senna had once again fallen under the curse of the Gulthias Tree. Jevin was unable to restore Senna’s sanity more than once (Mik suspected that Jevin had used his only prepared Remove Curse earlier). Jevin told the party that the Dowager Countess Greenwood owned a chest filled with scrolls and spellbooks. If they could retrieve a scroll of Remove Curse, they would be able to speak with Senna.

The party met with the Dowager Countess, convincing her to give the party the scroll that they required, provided that one of the party members used the scroll and not Jevin. The Dowager Countess made it clear that she did not trust Jevin, especially around magic.

Back at the cottage, the party successfully used the scroll and were able to ask Senna some questions about Belak and the location of the Citadel. They showed her the device, and she was able to deactivate it by removing the orichalcum crystal in the center. Senna also explained that the device was dangerous because it had been used to warp and twist arcane energy. Belak had used the device to “break people.”

At this point, the paladin used detect evil to investigate the nature of the deactivated device. The device was not evil, but he discovered spots of glowing evil on Jevin’s bandaged arms. Nearly coming to blows, Jevin was able to calm the situation down before explaining himself. Jevin told how, long ago, he been apprenticed to a servant of the evil goddess Gennaia. He later entered her service in order to learn more about orichalcum. He returned to the lands of the Covenant with the products of his research, where he was put to trial. Tvek sought to kill him for consorting with evil. Kass sought to forgive him, considering the usefulness of the information he brought with him. In the end, Jevin was imprisoned on his mother’s land, under the supervision of the church of Tvek.

The party decided to travel to Dalton to seek the assistance of the church of Eidar before continuing on to the Citadel.

On the road, they encountered a group of Dwarves fighting a large number of goblins. 18 goblins laid dead at the dwarves’ feet, but 16 goblins still lived and the dwarves’ strength was waning. The party came to their assistance, slaying the remainder of the goblins.

The Dwarves, of Clan Durbek, were led by a dwarf named Brennor. They had been sent from Poplar Falls as messengers to Dalton. An army of goblins had attacked Poplar Falls. As the town was about to fall, the goblins suddenly halted their attack and started to march in the direction of Windenford. (The party noted that the goblin attack occurred at nearly the same time that the wererats discovered Belak’s device in the party’s possession in Windenford. It is likely that the goblins were somehow notified that the device was not at Poplar Falls). Durbek clan has moved down from the mountains and have fortified Poplar Falls. They have also sent out hunting parties to kill goblins. Using the information from the Durbek clan, the party estimates that 450 goblins have been killed so far.

Outside of Dalton, the party encounters two merchant caravans, one with a broken axle. The merchants are moving their goods from the broken cart onto the other. They offer to sell the party goods at a discount. Aethyr buys a glowing bit of ore, and Mik buys a large supply of enchanted candy that makes the consumer vomit magical sparks. Aethyr later discovers that he was conned – the “magical” ore was simply enchanted iron.

After meeting a corrupt city guard, the party travels to the church of Eidar to ask their assistance. The head priest tells them that few warriors of Eidar are available right now. Between the goblin attacks and the sudden increase in crime, most warriors are already tasked with some quest. He promises to find what help is still available and gives the party a few potions and his blessings.

The party travels to a tavern to rest, where they see a group of locals betting on a game called Knivesies. In this game, two challengers climb on a table. Players bet by tossing gold coins on the table and standing behind their chosen champion. The challengers have one hand tied to the other’s hand, and must either knock their opponent off the table or gather the most coins to win. The party bets a time or two before Brogan the dwarven fighter challenges the resident champion, besting him easily. Next the paladin Trent challenges the dwarf. After a long and hard-fought battle, the dwarf nearly knocks the paladin off the table. Hanging off the table by his arms, the paladin pulls the dwarf down using their attached arms, and, using his greater dexterity, leaps out of the way, causing the dwarf to hit the ground first. The paladin wins!

The Failed Theft
Session 3

Having left Jevin ’s cottage, the party stayed at the Redwall Inn in Windenford. Entering the tavern, they spoke about their adventures in the mines and the attack of the goblins. When they awoke the next morning (Day 4), there was a message left for them from the Regent of Windenford inviting them to a banquet in their honor, as thanks for rescuing the miners from the collapse.

The party accepted the invitation. Before the banquet, the party split off and ran various errands in Windenford. Mik returned to Jevin’s cottage to check up on Senna, where he was able to assist the half-elf in (at least temporarily) abating Senna’s condition. When questioned, Senna was hesitant to give answers, but reinforced her message that the device is dangerous and must not fall into the wrong hands. She told Mik to ensure that the device stays away from any sorcerers or those affliated with The Eternal Way, in particular. She told the story of Belak, and how he led a party of adventurers to “slay” the goblins, only to betray them and ally with the goblins instead. Senna wants Belak dead.

Trent sold the gems and equipment the party had gathered, and then met Aethyr in the Crown Library.

Aethyr researched the local nobility, the Dowager Countess Greenwood in particular. He learned that she was born about 130 years ago, and has two children. Her, her deceased husband, and both children are human, and the half-elf Jevin (despite identifying himself as the Countess’ son) was not mentioned in the heraldry book. Another book told him that the land of the Earl Greenwood was historically much, much larger, and was reduced 80 years ago to barely more than a steadholding, a small privately owned farm. By land rights, the Countess should not hold her title, but she was allowed to keep it (it is fairly likely that her heir would hold only the title of steadholder). Her heir has chosen not to bother with a steading so small, preferring to make his fortune in Dalton and leave the steading to his mother.

The party attended the banquet, where they were given a reward of a medal from the church, and 100g from the owner of the mines. They met the Dowager Countess Greenwood among many others, who appeared to be near 65 years in age.

As the party travelled from the banquet to Jevin’s cottage, they were attacked by three rogues who appeared human. After defeating their attackers, the one surviving wererat was questioned by Mik, who charmed him into talking with magic.

Nimmit, the leader of the unnamed thieves’ guild, sent Benden Nalison and his cronies to retrieve the device from the party, and the request of a third party (presumably Belak). It appears that Nimmit has been forcibly converting people into wererats, and then using those wererats to serve him.

Before the paladin slew the evil wererat, Bendin asked Trent and Mik to tell his family that he loved them. He identified his family as Marta Nalison and Elaura Nalison (the apprentice earthmover encountered earlier). He indicated that he has been gone for many years. With no way to cure the wererat of lycanthropy, the paladin slew Bendin.

The Gulthias Tree
Session 2, 380 exp

After clearing out the mines, the PCs introduced themselves as Aethyr Ignigious, an Elf Wizard; Mik Sixeyes, a human “wizard” who hails from Phendrana; Brogan Stormfist, dwarven fighter from a clan in Eridu; Trent Duranin, paladin of Eidar; Gimik, river gnome bard; and Tsadok, half-orc druid of Mornir.

Luna and Elaura both made offers to the party. Luna offered to introduce the party to a friend of hers skilled in alchemy and healing, Jevin. Jevin might be able to help the Nesshin Senna, who is catatonic and unresponsive. Jevin lives outside of nearby Windenford. Elaura offered the assistance of her guild, the Earthmovers guild, which is based in Dalton.

The party escorted the injured back to Poplar Falls, where the tavern keeper offered them free boarding for their efforts in rescuing the miners.

Day 2

The party set out in the morning with Luna and Senna, heading toward Windenford.

Elaura and the injured miners agreed to wait in Poplar Falls for the next barge to transport them to Windenford sometime the next day.

The party encountered a small group of goblins en route, defeating it and capturing the leader for questioning. The goblins had attacked a farmstead and burned it to the ground. The captured goblin, Gorm, fell under the sway of Mik’s spell, and began speaking of his mission. Gorm and his group came from a place he called “the Citadel” which is somewhere in the nearby Deadwood. Many groups of goblins were sent from the Citadel by a man named Belak to recover a stolen device. Belak and the goblins serve a master known as the Gulthias Tree. Gorm recognized Senna and told the party that Senna came to the Citadel with Belak some years ago.

The party slew the goblin and continued on to Windenford, stopping to speak to Jevin. Jevin is a scholarly looking half-elf who lives at the estate of Dowager Countess Greenwood in a small cottage on the edge of her land. The party discerned that there was something odd between Jevin and his mother, the Dowager Countess. Jevin examined the nesshin Senna and determined that she was under possesion from some sort of spirit. The party told Jevin what they had learned of the Gulthias Tree, and Jevin surmised that the Gulthias Tree must be a spirit of some sort, and Senna’s condition was a result of betraying the tree.

First Play Session - The Stonecutter Mine
535 exp

The news flooded into the trading village of Poplar Falls: disaster at the nearby mines. Several brave folks went to assist, including our PCs (who have yet to properly introduce themselves) and Luna, cleric of Kass (NPC).

The party learned that the mine had been attacked by a large number of twig blights. A Thoqqua had also caused the collapse of several tunnels, and many miners were killed before they could escape from the dual threats of the mine collapse and the monsters.

The party defeated a number of monsters, including an earth elemental and many twig blights. Hiding underneath an overturned mining cart were two women, one human woman named Elaura who identified herself as an apprentice earthmover, and an elderly Nesshin named Senna. Senna was conscious but unresponsive.

Elaura explained that, earlier that day, she and the chief Earthmover had discovered a large natural cavern while expanding the mines. A party of 25 went to investigate the caverns. They followed the tunnels for some distance, where they discovered an elderly Nesshin (Senna), who told them to run, and fled with them. As they escaped, the Nesshin explained that the device she held was dangerous, and that her pursuers must not have it. A horde of twig blights chased them through the tunnels, and when the Chief Earthmover realized that they would be overcome, he collapsed the tunnel behind the escapees. A number of blights pushed their way through before the collapse, attacking the party. Elaura grabbed Senna and hid underneath the mining cart.
